with a cylinder head casting which consistently suffered from porosity between neighbouring combustion heads, and leaked across at 'A', a vent at 'B' failed to have any effect, but tubular chills as shown at 'C' completely removed the trouble.

Buick's cast 950 tons per day and produce 1450 Oldsmobile and 1300 Buick cylinder blocks. The total number of foundry employees including fettling, and staff is 2700.

The percentage of foundry scrap is 1.5 to 1.8 and including machine shop 2 to 3%. On a new job the maximum scrap for the first month does not usually exceed 15% but if scrap thereafter runs over 5% the most serious measures are taken.

Before leaving the Buick Foundry we arranged with Mr W.O. Mixer, the foundry manager through the courtesy of Mr H.S. Golden of the Buick Co. to forward samples of the 8-in-line Buick jacket bore and the 6 cylinder Oldsmobile cores to Derby, and we included in our reply cable to Derby a request for a sectioned Bentley cylinder casting, and sketch of gating and pouring to be forwarded to Buick, marked for the attention of Mr Golden.
