COPY FOR Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} N/3922 REPORT AND PARTICULARS OF 107-MG. TRIALS CAR. This car arrived at the Works on Saturday morning, Sept.2nd. and has been tried by Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} Sft.{Mr Swift} Mr. Smithdale, Mr. Sinclair, Mr. Faircloth, Mr. Bullamore, Mr. Haywood, Mr. Storey, Mr. Davis and myself. My impression of the car is as follows:- ENGINE. Very good for power and acceleration. Does not run nicely slowly on either ignition, either light or under load. The carburation is too strong. The most probable cause of the engine not running well slowly is wear on valves and valve guides. This however, was not investigated. Timing gears sing when the engine is cold, but are satisfactory when warm. The engine is inclined to thud on magneto ignition, and there is also a rather pronounced knock on light load. This is not apparent when the engine is running free or under full load. It appears to be a piston knock, but this is not confirmed when the engine is started up from cold, as there is then no sign of a knock. It will be remembered that when this car was turned out originally it had a rippling knock. It is probable that the knock which is now apparent is a legacy of the rippling knock. Ther is, however, no trace of the rippling knock. CLUTCH. The clutch is good and appears to be quite free from any trouble with the spigot valve. After we had taken the power curve on the dynamometer it was inclined to squeak [strikethrough: stick] and two syringes of oil were put in. This is the only job which has been done on the car whilst in our hands. GEAR BOX. Very good all round. The side shaft is noisy when started up from cold but is quite satisfactory when warm. There is an entire absence of rattle from the side shaft gears. The second and third gears are of course very good and appear to be exactly as when the car was turned out. (Ground gears are fitted in the second and third). The amount of bach lash in the continuous gears was measured in four positions and is as follows:- .0035. .003 .0015 .002. AXLE. This is poor and when thoroughly warmed up can only be described as bad, the worst feature being at about 26 miles per hour. The axle is undoubtedly the worst feature of the car. .CONTD. | ||
