W/P - Sr. c. to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} - Kingsbury. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}21/JH.28.2.38. BENTLEY BACK AXLE. We wish to obtain running experience on Bentley back axle pinion bearings GB.2680; with 0.005 preload. Such a bearing was fitted to 6.B.IV. during the present 10,000 mile test but was unfortunately damaged by the failure of the nose bearing. The remaining mileage to be done on this car is insufficient for testing a new bearing. It would help us if you could fit one of these bearings to your trials car as we want the bearing to be run under conditions as severe as possible for not less than 15,000 miles. We will be sending you within a few days the bearings complete with a new nut GB.1134, housing G.100829, cover GB.2666, and appropriate hardened packing washer GB.2704. As the bearing has a preload of 0.005 instead of the standard 0.000 - 0.001 the packing washer has to be 0.006 greater than the free gap between the bearing and the cover. It is to make sure that this washer is correct that we have sent you the housing, cover and washer. Will you please make sure that these parts are kept together as a unit and used in your axle. The washer G.100833-7 should be selected in the normal way to give the correct setting of the gears. Will you please fit this bearing and let us know how it behaves.
