re. Weight of 20 - HP. Chassis.

With reference to your memo BJ1/H13.3.23, attaching copy of LHS{Lord Herbert Scott}/HH26/8.3.23, which Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has handed to us to deal with.

Unfortunately at the time Mr. Spinney came to the Works to go into the question of 20-HP.weights with us, there were not many chassis complete available for weighing purposes .

The chassis from which the weights were taken,i.e. 46-G-2, was, as it now turns out, below the average 20-HP chassis weight.

The chassis now selected, 46-G-6 is for some reason or other one of the heaviest of the 20-HP chassis which have so far been delivered.

We have of course weighed each Goshawk chassis prior to delivery, and we have now made a summary of all these weights and find that the average weight of all the chassis so far delivered is 2262 Lbs. This is the weight of the chassis complete with tyres, gaiters, wing irons, front lamp irons, step irons, radiator shutters, oil, water and petrol.

The additional weight to go on is Spare wheel and tyre 73 Lbs., battery 70 Lbs. R.R. Kit of Spares & Tools 45 Lbs. This compares with the weight of 2235.Lbs. to which is to be added the above extras, which was the original weight agreed upon with Mr. Spinney to be the 20-HP. chassis weight, and as will be seen, is an increase of 27 Lbs.

We shall be glad if you will, therefore, please regard this as the average chassis weight for the 20-HP. chassis, i.e. 2262 Lbs.

The chassis mentioned by you as coming out heavy, i.e. 46-G-6 is an exception. Had not the weight of this chassis been confirmed by Sales Dept. we should have come to the conclusion that it was incorrectly weighed at the Works.

Taking a resume of the weights of chassis delivered, it is a fact that the early chassis do vary considerably in weight, but the later chassis have been very consistent and have varied very little under or over the average above quoted.
