AXLE SHAFT TEST RIG.

The tests we wish to carry out on this rig are to determine the life of varying shaft sizes both ground and black and the effect on the life of the wheel bearing of different fits, elongated cage holes etc.

Test (1). Four 40 mm shafts, ground all over, 1 1/2 ton load, 250,000 revolutions followed by 35,000 revolutions at a load of 2 1/2 tons.

The bearings should be -
(a) Hoffmann 000 fit size and size in housing.
(b) & (c) As (a) with holes in cages elongated .025.
(d) as (a) with outer race .010 slack endwise in housing.

Test (2). As Test (1) with 1 5/8 dia. shafts.

Test (3). Four 40 mm or 1 5/8 shaft left black on taper, otherwise as above.

The bearings to be chosen after Tests (1) and (2).

Test (4). Four 1.531 dia. shafts ground all over.

The bearings to be -
(a) New Departure 88128.
(b) As (a) but outer race .010 end slack in housing.
(c) Skefco 88128.
(d) As (c) but outer race .010 end slack in housing.
