The unauthorized order of 48 sample valves from Daniel Doncaster Co, Ltd.

Royce - Buyer} /Les 3/ER 13.12.38 Sample Valves received from Daniel Doncaster Co, Ltd., We are very surprised to find that 48 Valves have been ordered and received from Messrs. Daniel Doncaster, without consulting either the Experimental Department or the Engineering Cost Office. The Experimental Department at the moment, are testing Exhaust Valves produced by the Belgrave Engineering Co, Ltd., and Motor Components, Ltd., which in some cases are showing complete satisfaction. The saving in cost of Exhaust Valves produced by these 3 firms compared with our own factory is as follows:- Motor Components save 4/- each. Belgrave Engineering save 2/8d. Daniel Doncaster Ltd., save 2d. each. As we have had considerable experience with valves produced by Motor Components and Belgrave Engineering, but have had no experience with Daniel Doncaster, we do not intend to increase the Experimental Department's expenditure by machining and testing Doncaster's Valves. Obviously, the Exhaust Valves can be incredibly expensive in service, and it is essential that very thorough testing is done before standardisation is possible. We contend, therefore, that if this matter had received initial consideration in the right department, these 48 Valves would not have been ordered and thus there would have been a saving of £4.4.0. and our good will with Messrs.
