-2- There is a very serious oil leak from the rear engine bearing. During the morning's continual high speed the oil temperature rose to 120°C. I have instructed that the car must not be kept going at a high speed after the oil temperature has reached 100°C, otherwise we shall have the bearings going. SHOCK DAMPERS. The shock dampers so far are free from audible knocks, but are not free from oil leaks. The U.S.R. damper is leaking oil rather badly from the gland. GEARBOX. The opinion generally is that the gearbox is getting worse for noise on all gears and sideshaft. There is no bad oil leak from the gearbox, but several slight leaks, chiefly from the selector cap and gear lever bracket. The flywheel is flinging oil about in the clutch pit. We have had no trouble with gears coming out of mesh. STEERING. The steering is very good for absence of shocks but is very poor for selectivity. STARTER MOTOR. This fails approx. once in every twelve engagements. It does not appear to enter the teeth of the flywheel, most probably being too tight in mesh. It rights itself. TRANSMISSION. The transmission rattle when the box is really hot has three periods, 11-13, 15-17, and 30-36 m.p.h. These periods will be dealt with by the fitting of various rubbers in the clutch plate in due course. CROSS STEERING TUBE. The cross steering tube has fouled the front tray where the tray is bulged out for the oil pump. Rear Axle. The rear axle is poor but we are not worrying about this at present, but are rather watching to see that no trouble arises from the thrust race. | ||
