Re Cross Steering Tube.

Some time ago I instructed that the screw adjustment on the above should be cancelled and packing used behind the blocks and gave the reason.

It appears that this has not been done. It should also be a Repair Department instruction. [Handwritten note: has been given to Wormald by Dagnal on 23.5.13]

An alternative is that a much longer check nut should be fitted with castellated end pin passing right through the tube and, after adjustment, the whole sweated up with soft solder solid.

The former is better for new work - the latter for repair.

The drawing sent of the cores tube for the larger spheres and for series 2700 requires some alterations in addition to the above. Lighten the sphere by drilling as shewn, use thicker inside block with greater area of support behind by not boring so large a hole or preferably no hole and cancel the blocking up disc. The square hole should not pass right through so as to leave plenty of surface next to bronze block.

The cross tube with the long spring for experimental purposes could not be used - please cancel it.

The one already made with the spring buffers in one direction shews something remarkable in experimental test i.e. the 800 lbs is best - which suggested to my mind that the clearance was insufficient - continue to use this strongest spring, double the clearance and retest.
