RE TESTS OF ALUMINIUM ALLOYS

With reference to the above tests, Mr. Royce, in his memo R4/B27417, remarks "I think these tests are most valuable, and should becontinued".

In accordance with his instructions, therefore, we wish to have carried out a complete set of tests on the following range of alloys:-

No. Designation Alloy.

(1) P1 Present Standard Piston Alloy containing 87% of aluminium, 12% of copper, and less than .2% of zinc.

(2) P2 An alloy with considerably less copper than the above, namely, containing 91% of aluminium, 8% of copper and less than .2% of zinc.

(3) C Standard Crankcase Alloy, containing 2% of copper, 12% of zinc, and the rest alum:

(4) M1 Magnalium Metal.

(5) L Levett Metal, containing 96.4% of aluminium, 2.2% of copper, .5% of zinc and .2% manganese.

(6) H The Metal suggested by Mr. Hall, containing approximately 94.5% of alum: 2.5 to 3.2% of zinc, .8 to 1.5% of antimony, and 1.0 to 1.5% nickel. copper 1 to 1.5

(7) A Aluminium Copper Antimony Alloy, containing 10% of copper and 1.2 to 1.7% of antimony the rest aluminium.

(8) M2 Miralite Metal which consists of about 88% of aluminium, 9.64% copper .23% of zinc 1.15% tin and .10% of magnesium.
