Four Cylinder Engines. Larger Size.

The two litre 4-cylinder 14 H.P. R.A.C. engine has been built from pieces that were completed before the war.

It is, of course, made from senior range engine parts. It is being run in a senior range chassis. The results are encouraging. It pulls the 32 cwt. car into which it is fitted, with good spirit and gives a better performance than the 12 H.P. Rover. It should make a first class Bentley version of the Myth in its larger sizes if such a car is ever thought to be desirable. So far, road work has been concentrated on getting the best engine mounting. The results achieved up to the present, indicate that a degree of smoothness has been reached that would be quite satisfactory for a Bentley, but hardly for a Rolls-Royce. A full report will be issued when the present series of experiments have been completed. The engine referred to above, is the one at the head of the lower table on Page 8 of the report issued before the last chassis meeting, Em.1/ML.24.1.41. Its displacement is 121 Cu.Ins.

OTHER SMALL CARS.

We are getting a good deal of useful information from the small cars we are running. The attached report, Em/Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}1/SF.30.5.41, summarises how they are behaving. The 10 H.P. Vauxhall, which is the nicest car to handle, has given continuous trouble. Its un-reliability has been confirmed as I am running a similar model which reproduces most of the failures. Vauxhalls do the minimum free of charge repairs.

It seems improbable that we shall be able to buy a proprietory rear axle for the Myth when it is in production, as on all the small cars we have run, the axles are noisy.

We are proposing to get rid of the Vauxhall and should like to replace it with a B.M.W. or Lancia 'prilla to get a figure of merit for a small continental car.
