RE CHASSIS 6 EX.

RECEIVED 1 SEP 1920

You will remember that I wrote that the impressions of this car were that the fitting was not very good. We now find still further proof of less perfect workmanship, than in pre-war times. The points are only of minor importance, but they appear to shew a deterioration in the quality of the work passed by the Inspectors.

You will remember that on receipt of the car I pointed out one compression being very bad. On returning to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town, an investigation of this shewed bad machine work on the valve seats. This we hope you will be able to inspect, and bring before Mr. Wormald's notice on return of the car to Derby, because it is a very important matter, and not concerned in an unimportant detail, but to a vital part of the engine.

Re Dynamo Suspension. x.295 x.3772
On examination of the burnt out dynamo I thought the spring which was fitted to maintain belt tightness was too rigid, and was adjusted so that the belt was very much tighter than is necessary to drive the dynamo. The section of this spring should be reduced until the convolutions are choc-a-bloc when about 50% more than the necessary tightness is exerted on the belt, so that unless a man is an idiot he will not increase the tension of the belt more than 50% greater than what we think is the best tension.

This is not a matter of bad workmanship, but may be
