MINUTES OF GUN MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY

AUGUST 28th, 1940.

40 mm. GUN.

1. TWO SAMPLE GUNS FOR THE ADMIRALTY.

The position of these was outlined. The parts other than the cradle will be finished by the week-end. The first cradle is expected to be completed by Thursday, September 5th. Erection and test may be expected to take a week.

After some discussion, it was agreed that salt water tests should be carried out, provided they did not take more than 24 hours.

It therefore seemed probable that the first gun would be despatched by the middle of September. This was the earliest date which had ever been promised to the Admiralty.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} stressed once more his anxiety to see the guns in the hands of the user.

Vs.{J. Vickers} was asked to go into the question of making the striker pin and other parts, which were likely to affect the functioning of the gun if they became corroded, in stainless steel.

It was also agreed that some treatment should be instructed for the coil springs, to prevent corrosion.

2. FUTURE DEVELOPMENT - SINGLE SHOT GUN.

Vs.{J. Vickers} stated that detailing of the brass cradle was approaching completion. Also that he had made modifications to the sear to improve reliability of action.
