RE. FUMES INSIDE COVERED BODIES. X 2448 X.858 X.3431

With reference to my complaint re. the above, I should be glad if you will let me know what the possibilities are of a cure being effected, how soon it can be supplied to cars being produced, and whether such can be applied to post-war cars retrospectively.

I am anxious for this to be considered, as I feel sure we shall have some complaints from customers who have post-war cars fitted with totally enclosed bodies.

The points to be considered on this matter are:-

1. Gases blowing past the pistons. I am still convinced in my mind that the present pistons and rings are not as satisfactory in this respect as the pre-war cars.

2. Ventilation from the crankchamber being more than it is at present, also for it to be led away clear of the undershield.

3. The exhaust fumes from the cut-out into the undershield. This complaint was brought forward some time ago, and I was informed that undershields in future would be made with the bulged portion in the undershield for the cut-out being fixed with the flange on the outside of the undershield, and not on the inside as at present. The present fixture allows a lip to be formed into which the exhaust gases blow, which appears to get worse with use, hence the above complaints.
