X.3438. FAN DRIVE. RE BELTS. X.3566.

Please note that the Experimental and Test Dept., are definitely in agreement that we cannot send away chassis, other than War Office chassis, which contains the fibre wearing links. The reason why we cannot use them being that they cause a vibration which is unpleasant and would give a customer the impression that his engine was out of balance and his gears noisy, and therefore we would certainly have trouble occurring from this point of view which would cost us more than the question of supplying a belt.

In view of this the D.O. should modify their instructions to the works cancelling the type of belt referred to and replacing same by a Whittle belt, which consists only of leather links with steel connectors, no fibre or raw hide being used in the construction of the belts.

As we are now abandoning the normal length Whittle belt for the dynamo drive and substituting a half link Whittle belt it is considered that we should not use a half link belt for the fan, but carry on with the standard link until these are used up, replacing the ones taken from stock, intended for the dynamo drive by the half link
