X.5310 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from AJS. S E C R E T. AJS1/43.2.25. c. to CJ. R.{Sir Henry Royce} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} U. S. A.{Mr Adams} 4-SPEED BOX. X.5310 We send herewith LeC.1992 (original to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} print to R.{Sir Henry Royce}) shewing :- (1) Detachable change speed lever as asked for. (2) Smaller knob on above lever which is found desirable for brake lever clearance. Referring to (1) in place of the suggested brazed in plug for attaching the hand lever we have used a tube which is swaged down at this end as well as the other. Judging from experience of swaging machines there seems to be no reason why a tube should not be treated at both ends, and in this case by abandoning the brazing we have a lighter, simpler, and less expensive job. We realise that it may be a commercial proposition to produce bore of tube to the exact curvature and taper as shewn on our drawing, and in view of this when BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} has procured these tubes we should like to see one sawn up after machining. The position of change speed lever relative to frame on some cars may be nearer the centre line of car than shewn, owing to body rail otherwise being cut away unduly. We should like Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to report on the ease of sideways sliding of the shaft on these short ones. AJS. | ||
