Bentley complaint regarding third gear trouble and the subsequent repair.

Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/7/JAB. 13th February 1937. BENTLEY COMPLAINT. While in Paris, a complaint case came in of third gear trouble. When the box was hot, the third gear could not be engaged and difficulty was met in getting the change speed lever back to neutral. I got Scholes to dismantle the box, and the trouble was found to be due to the tightness of the engaging teeth of the 3rd gear inside the cone. The male 3rd gear teeth on the synchromesh sleeve would enter in one position only, in any other position, the teeth were binding. Three new male third gears were tried, but none would engage correctly, proving that the inner serrations of the third gear was at fault.
