Swal I have agreed to this Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}

SINGLE CYLINDER UNITS.

As agreed verbally with you, we give below details of the proposed bed arrangement of the above units.

Three new units are being constructed, of which the first, the Liquid Cooled Exe engine, will be completed in approximately 3 week's time. The original proposal was to place this on No. 20 bed.

The next two units will be a Vulture Six Cylinder and a third Air Cooled Exe engine (see Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}/RVM.7/RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}30.12.36 and Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}1/GB.4.11.36). The Vulture Six Cylinder will have to be placed on No.31 bed in the position at present occupied by the crankcase rig, which will finish its tests by the time that the Vulture is nearing completion.

For general convenience we propose to instal the third Air Cooled Exe on 4.b., which will necessitate finding an alternative bed for the Bentley. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} and ourselves are anxious to keep the car and aero beds separate and we have agreed to instal the Bentley unit on 2.a. The Kestrel unit at present on this bed could then be moved to No.20 bed (without alterations) instead of altering No.20 bed to suit the Liquid Cooled Exe and the latter will be fitted in No.31 bed beside the Vulture Six Cylinder. The equipment required for the Liquid Cooled Exe should be moved from bed 2.a. and the gear for the Bentley moved with the unit from bed 4.b. It is not possible to leave the tackle at present in bed 2.a. for the Bentley as the liquid cooled Exe engine is a boosted unit requiring a motor driven blower complete with surge tank, heater, etc. The layout for the Exe on No.31 bed would be similar to that already instructed for No.20, with the exception that the starting motor will also drive the blower and that the control panel, coolant system and boost lines will need modification.

The tackle at present stored in No.31 bed will be moved to the new tackle shed which should therefore be urged as much as possible.

We are sure that the reshuffling required to find a home for the 3rd air cooled 'Exe' unit and to separate the car beds from the aero beds gives the best and most permanent arrangement at the expense of laying out again the equipment for the liquid cooled Exe in No.31 bed. The most urgent unit is this one as the Air Ministry and ourselves are anxious to complete and collect payment by the end of the financial year i.e. March.
