[Handwritten top] F14E 1263. Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} I sent Punt to the S.U. works to save cost of sending a lot of pumps to Crewe Levallois Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} DERBY copy to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} re: Modifications to S.U. PUMPS With reference to Depot Sheets n°. Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} 315 et 316 concerning modifications to S.U. petrol pumps. For your information Mr. Punt during a visit to the Works about three weeks ago saw Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} and took the matter up with him concerning the fitting of latest type diaphragms to pumps. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} arranged for Mr. Punt in company with Mr. Dixon to visit the S.U. Works. While he was at the S.U. Works, Messrs. S.U. showed him how the modification should be carried out and gave him 24 latest type diaphragms and a special forked gauge needed when fitting them. Mr. Punt has instructed our head electrician how to effect the changeover of the diaphragms and we are now modifying pumps of Phantom III, 25/30 HP. and Bentley 4 1/4 lit. chassis as they become available. All pumps which we modify we will stamp them G5 on the front of the base { we also intend to to stamp the pump with the letter P. ( Paris) on the side of the base. } [Handwritten] So that those pumps which we modify, can be easily recognised. We will advise you of the chassis numbers concerned for record purposes. As instructed in Depot Sheet n°? Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} 316 we will replace any defective pumps on 3 1/2 Lit. cars in service with pumps having the latest diaphragms. Please let us know when we may expect delivery of some of the new base plates for 3 1/2 et 4 1/4 Lit. Bentley chassis? It is to be understood that we fit modified type retaining clips to the valves of pumps of 25/30 HP. and Phantom III chassis, as they become available as per your memo Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/CM5/IB.3.10.36. In view of the above we take it that RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} & yourself will not object to us fitting new diaphragms. We have rigged us a suitable test bed for the pumps. Sr/VA.
