Y9940 To WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/T15.12.23. With reference to the attached, in the first paragraph the promise is too optimistic. The position at present is that we have yet to receive drawings from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} for two types of brakes. These are then to be made and tested in order to decide which of them is the better. We have had sufficient experience with brakes lately to know that it will take time to get either of these brakes satisfactory. We can assume that the Experimental Dept. will need a fortnight for testing before they can say which of the brakes should be used. After that decision is made, W.W. then have to design similar brakes to suit the rear axle for the 40/50. These have then to be made and tested. We think it is likely to be the end of January or early in February before we have an experimental car fitted with what is now known as the final arrangement. We think we ought to impress you with the fact that we have been working on brakes for nearly three months and we have still a long way to go to get out of our troubles. It is too much to expect that the designs which we now have in hand will be right first time. As regards any promise for E.A.C.2, we think this should be very guarded. It is unreasonable to expect to give a promise until one car has been made. We have come badly to grief in attempting Contd. | ||
