11128/ Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}8/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 18th November, 1938. Comdr. Du Cane, Messrs. Vosper Limited, PORTSMOUTH. Dear Comdr. Du Cane, Thank you for your letter of the 17th November, I shall have to guess to answer your queries, and, as a consequence, propose to be conservative. As a petrol engine we rate the Line 8 @ 150 B.H.P. @ 3,000 R.P.M. for a dry weight of 700 lbs. This is complete with dynamo and starter motor and flywheel and clutch sufficient for Marine purposes. We expect the same engine as a Diesel will give 100 B.H.P. @ 2750 r.p.m. With regard to consumption, we attach a consumption loop of our present 4 1/4-litre Bentley engine which is representative of what we might expect on a petrol unit. Regarding Diesel consumptions, to be really pessimistic it might be a good idea to assume that this is the same as petrol. Yours sincerely, | ||
