FRONT SPRING RATING TESTS. V8410 V3900

We have carried out a number of front spring rating tests to confirm the results given in Cy2/E4.5.26.
Originally the tests were intended to deal only with deflections such as were likely to be encountered under the conditions complained of by Sales as giving the worst riding combination, i.e. 20-30 M.P.H. on a main road. Under these circumstances the maximum deflection of the spring from our tests has been shewn to be 1.00". However, as we have since demonstrated that we can alter the front spring rating under these circumstances by 50%, without a very marked improvement being felt by passengers in the rear seats, it is clear from the results obtained that neither the shackle or the spring pad alteration introduced with front wheel brakes can have had a measurable effect on the recent outbreak of suspension complaints.

All the tests were taken on a well lubricated Firth's 1100 lb. spring (F.71975) of 43.5" centre. In order to eliminate the factor of spring clip adjustment as far as possible, three sets of tests were taken with the spring in any given condition, the clips being slacked off and re-tightened after each set of readings. At every load, three different applications were made and micrometer readings taken. The agreement between various clip adjustments, ostensibly supposed to be Contd.
