SEQUENCE STARTER MOTOR.

Further again to our EFC4/LG6.3.29. fault (2) has been somewhat reduced without loss of necessary vigour by replacing 17 S.W.G. teazer winding with 18 S.W.G. winding of the same number of turns. The flux would not be much reduced (the magnetic circuit being near saturation) but the armature current and torque are reduced and rotation is less relatively.

We have proved by rig trial that the action of engagement with a gradient of 1 in 3 1/2 either way remains satisfactory with this 18 S.W.G. winding.

Fault (3) i.e. of bouncing when coming out of gear causing knocking and jangling of the pinion teeth on the wheel teeth, has been cured by the provision of a .030" release hole through the piston, moreover this modification renders the dependence of the operation of the system on the dry or oily condition of the piston far less critical.

We had a trial yesterday of this test motor previous to changing the teazer winding but otherwise as described, on a test bed engine, with reasonably satisfactory results apart from ordinary gear noise when rolling engine, gears scream when coming out of gear, corner jamming and slight noise on engagement.
