Suggestions from Mr. Royce and Mr. Hives on using a back pressure valve and a larger ram to prevent knocks and piston ring wear.

Mr. Royce has suggested the use of a back pressure valve on the oil supply to the ram, but thinks that it is probably not practical, though it might work with a diaphragm or someform of reed valve. Anyway, he thinks that this should be tried. Experiments should be made using this back pressure valve with and without a spring.

Mr. Hives reports that the 1" diameter ram is beneficial in preventing knocks, but not in entirely eliminating them.
Mr. Royce thinks that the ram could soon be doubled in area, when it should do probably all that we want. he further points out that if the piston is held to one side, it should stop the piston rings wearing in their grooves.
