ATTEMPTS TO REFLOAT MISS ENGLAND II.

TWELVE HOURS' WORK

For 12 hours yesterday efforts were made to refloat Miss England II. She lies in 20 fathoms of water just 600 yards from the west shore of the lake opposite White Cross Bay, so named from the cross erected nearly 80 years ago to mark where two victims were drowned while boating. This cross bears the text: "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour."

The dragging was maintained all day as a preliminary to grappling the boat and lifting her with a special steel cable, 1¼in. in diameter and 200ft. long. On the first occasion that drags got a grip yesterday they slipped, but the second time they held and winding-up operations began. Almost immediately, however, something gave and it was found that a drag had grappled a copper pipe which was part of the engine. This has led to the conclusion that the boat is lying on her keel. The men engaged on the task would prefer her keel upwards so as to enable the drags to get a purchase on the propeller.

The present intention is to raise the boat to within 6ft. of the surface and tow her inshore to the shallows, where it will be easier to attach her to lighters.
