PROGRAMME OF TESTS

We do not wish to recommend an elaborate programme of tests requiring a lot of new tackle until we know more about flywheel vibrations. We wish to do as much as possible with various combinations of existing bits first, therefore we have divided the programme of tests under two headings:-

(1) Preliminary tests which we can do with existing bits with a few minor modifications.

(2) Probable future programme after the preliminary tests have been completed.

Preliminary Tests

(1) Check actual out-of-truth of flywheel when turned over by hand with a dial indicator. Show the position of the maximum out-of-truth relative to No.6 crank. This might be repeated from time to time in the course of the tests.

(2) Remove the slipper wheels and observe the torsional frequency. This will probably be affected by the Hardy coupling and drive shaft fixed on the crankshaft nose. We may find it advisable to use a more flexible type of coupling to avoid the torsional period and flywheel period overlapping.

(3) Check flywheel period, which should be 3,200 r.p.m. This will probably be affected in some way by the fact that the engine is on the test bed and not in a car. If so, we ought to try to get this back to the normal r.p.m. as near as conveniently possible by wangling the mounting.

(4) Run up plus and minus rear part of the flywheel and observe the effect on the period and amplitude as near as possible.

(5) Measure weights and polar and lateral moments of inertia of:-
(a) Complete flywheel, and
(b) Crankshaft half of flywheel (front part) only.

One might be found in the Stores for this test.
