Sliding Handle Reverse.
Actuation for Gear Lever.
---------------------

With reference to the criticisms of our design N. Sch.3672. the sample submitted, which was made to GB.712 differs from our N. Sch. in several ways which do not improve it, and for which we see no necessity.

We agree that the handle shown in N. Sch. 3672 is larger than the standard handle. We have, however, now been able to reduce the pieces so that the identical knob can be used, and we attach N. Sch. 3760 showing the modified design.

We find that there is no necessity on any of the gear levers for the rod to be loosely attached to the knob. If the small hole in the upper end of the lever is kept short, the rod can be withdrawn upwards.

We suggest that the rod be screwed in tightly, secured with a parallel pin, then bent as required and filed to correct length.

The method shown on N. Sch. 3672 to secure the rod is the same as used for the production hand brake lever but does not, we find, give a tight fixing.

The advantages given by our scheme over the one suggested - EX.8727 are:

(1) The spring load provides friction which will prevent rattles.

(2) The handle can be readily dismantled.

(3) There are no features such as the small pin used to prevent rotation of the handle in EX.8727, which may become loose and cause friction by jointing.JAMBING

We attach N. Sch's 3672, 3760, GB.712 and ex.8727.
