SK 27.5.37. (See Mr. A.E. HILLI.)

Federal Mogul have developed a high conductivity bronze for cylinder heads. The properties are :-

Conductivity (heat treated) .75 absolute units.
Brinell 100 to 120
Strength Between cast and forged alum.
Weight Slightly heavier than C.I.
Price About twice that of alum.
Expansion About 14 millionths °C.

The alloy casts as readily as aluminium, but difficulty is experienced in getting thin walls, so that they recommend using it for the cylinder head with a split water jacket. The top portion being aluminium. The secret of such a job lies they say in using separate studs to hold the jacket to the head and the head to the block.

Ford is now using this construction with their heads for his trucks and has eliminated cracking troubles experienced with aluminium.

The trouble experienced is that with the higher compression ratios possible (6.3 increased to 7.75) carbon formation icing is much more critical and has given trouble.

They say this alloy has not yet been fully developed and they don't know a lot about it. Its use for pistons is under consideration.

They will have a sample of the material available if someone goes along next week to collect it.
