Extract from Mr Bailey's Olympia Report:-

Hydraulic Transmission.

The only system shown was that of Dr Lentz. This, in my opinion, - while being very ingenious and having many good points - is not at present a working proposition, for the following reasons :-

(a) The system is such that the pumps are always working even on top speed. This is bad, as it heats up the oil to very high temperatures, wear and leakages soon develop, and the friction of fluid through the ports and passages causes loss of efficiency.

(b) The method of pumping is not good, as the sliding vanes soon develop leaks at the periphery and sides.

(c) The efficiency of such a system even at its best speed is very low, falling below 75%.

Its good points are :-

(1) It does away with clutch gear box and differential.

(2) It forms in itself a good brake, which could be used indefinitely on a bad grade without causing trouble like hot brake drums.

(3) It gives a wide range of speed and power variation.
