To Na.{Mr Nadin} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X8040 Y3666 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG19.7.28. PISTON KNOCKS. X8040 With reference to the attached note from Springfield in connection with the above. We cannot say from our experience with the Phantom that we should gain any appreciable advantage by fitting extra oil. Our Repair Dept. state that scored pistons on the Phantom are very rare - they are considerably less than on the Silver Ghost. The outside Depots have not reported any trouble which, in our opinion, could be overcome with extra oil. As regards knocking when the engine starts up cold. In cases of customers complaints, this is remedied by attention to the piston clearances. In the case of a car sent in for repair on which there is no complaint of piston knocks, the knocks when cold are not attended to if they go off after 4 or 5 mins. light running.
