We have fitted the Lucas Starter Motor to the engine with the R-R Bendix Pinion. We are having difficulty in getting the pinion to disengage. As soon as the circuit is made the pinion engages; when the engine fires it will not free itself. We have tried several slight alterations, such as, making the pinion very slack on the thread also making certain that the thread is not jammed endways when driving. So far, however, we have not been able to make the pinion disengage. The Bendix Drive on the Marmon car is the drive we have had the most experience with. We have examined that and find that the lead of the thread for the Bendix Pinion is very different to the one we have. We are making another pinion copying the proportions of the Marmon. The starter motor turns the engine easily. The noise from the gearing when the engine is being motored round is very bad; worse than the average car. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
