LES

For Mr. Leslie's attention.

Dear Mr. Leslie,

I thank you for your letter of the 7th instant, and I am interested to read about the shock absorbers and the short life that the spindles gave.

I do not think we would have much difficulty in getting larger shafts in, and I am asking our people to get out a drawing showing the largest shafts we can get.

In the meantime however I suggest sending over a pair of shock absorbers with spring-loaded valves and would be glad if you would put them through the same tests, to see if there is any difference in the life of the spindle.

Whilst I appreciate that you have 1 3/8" diameter spindles on your shock absorbers, you also have rather long arms.

Up to the time of writing, spindle breakage has not shown up, although we have had some small shock absorbers running on a 22 h.p. car with 9" arms, and tightened up so that they can hardly be moved. This does not seem to have affected the spindle, and for this reason I would be interested to know how long the spindles last on the spring-loaded valves.

We will send the pair of shock absorbers with the heaviest springs we have got so that they can be tightened up to much beyond what would be required in normal practice.

cont'd...
