To EH. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to BJ. ORIGINAL. St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} Margaret's Bay. [handwritten] 5 Sept. 13th. 1917. Re - After-the-War Chassis. R3/W12917. [handwritten] X.682. X.2641 [stamp] RECEIVED [stamp of a clock face with text '14 SEP 1917'] It was intended that the Push Button for the starter switch should go on the instrument board in a convenient place for the driver. We do not wish this to be actuated with the foot, or it will soon be thought on a par with 'jamming your foot down on the Packard'. If it is on the instrument board such as is used on 49-GB or other modern cars, there should be no temptation to jam your foot on it. [handwritten] X.3082 Regarding the main switch this should be placed in the circuit between the starter battery and the starter motor so as to keep the length of the conductors as short as possible. It might be very inconvenient to locate this switch [handwritten insert] the push button [end insert] and [handwritten above] be forced to [end above] bring the cables to it where the driver [handwritten above] can [end above] reach out. We think, therefore, it is quite undesirable to combine it with a Push Button Switch, in fact, it would be losing the beauty of the scheme as it was intended [handwritten above] it should [end above] be worked out.
