(2) As regards P. 2. we were not aware that this was giving trouble but in view of your memo, we are including this in the programme of improvement. The first P. 2's were fitted with manifolds made of drawn steel tubing but these were later discarded in favour of a cast iron form of pipe on account of noise. In the improve.d manifolds we are preparing for submission to R.{Sir Henry Royce} we are giving serious consideration to the use of cooling ribs which are very generally used by other people and which may provide some cooler metal for maintaining the stiffness of the pipe under the conditions where distortion now occurs. Regarding the last paragraph of your memo, there is without a doubt a lot of trouble on other makes of cars due to exhaust blows, but within our sphere of knowledge cases of broken or cracked manifolds are rare.
