HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X4565 To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from BJ. Copy to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Copy to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Low Pressure Tyres on Phantoms. BJ9/E7/10/26 With reference to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}'sLG6/10/26, please arrange for us to meet Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} to-morrow, Friday, at 11 at the Works. The position, as far as we are able to understand it at present is: Two cars went to France. 8-EX, with a heavy closed body, which is probably most like the average body used on the RR chassis, was not fitted with any steering damping device. PN{Mr Northey} found it unsatisfactory with low pressure tyres. 12-EX, with an open touring body, was fitted with damping to the steering and was satisfactory with low pressure tyres. New Axle A car is now being sent to France with an open touring body, low pressure tyres and no steering damping device. This car also has a heavy axle such as will be delivered standard to our customers, whereas 12-EX and 8-EX had light axles such as will not be delivered to our customers for some time to come. All the cars are fitted with hydraulic dampers to the front axle. No objection to balloon tyres w/o steering device. but axle steering too heavy. We are not clear from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}'s memo. whether it is proposed to deliver any chassis with low pressure tyres and no friction device to the steering, or whether it is expected that the friction device, which is now being designed at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town, will be manufactured and thoroughly tested on both light and heavy cars and passed as standard before low pressure tyres are delivered to customers. We wish PN{Mr Northey} to test a car, especially with a heavy body, with a chassis in every respect similar to what will be delivered to customers, with low pressure tyres. We hope such a car can be prepared for him to test in France at an early date in order to prevent delay in delivery of low pressure tyres to customers. Not intended If it is intended not to deliver any chassis with low pressure tyres without friction device to the steering, then we do not think any good purpose will be served by sending 103-MC to France for a test now. If it is intended that every car | ||
