Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} c. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. Sr. MR. EMBIRICOS. Bentley B. 260 GA. We have carried out a further test on this car to prove that revving the engine is the cause of the excessive oil consumption. To-day, the speed of the engine has not been allowed to exceed 2.500 revs. i.e. 60 MPH. The oil pressure has not exceeded 32 lbs. pressure. 100 Miles run over the same course. .0825 gallons of oil used - 1.212 MPG. Time 2 hrs.30 mins. - Average speed 40 MPH. We therefore have obtained the following results for 100 miles run. 1) Average speed 40 MPH. Engine not allowed to exceed 2.500 revs. 1.212 MPG. 2) Average speed 50 MPH. Engine speed not exceeded 4.000 but many times up to that. 458 MPG. Oil pressure over 40 lbs. 3) Average speed 60 MPH. engine speed not exceeded 4.000 but kept at these revs. third gear used frequently. 247 MPG. Oil pressure hard over 40 lbs. pressure mark most of the time. The latter speed is the usual for this owner. Conclusion :- Piston rings not capable of dealing with quantity of oil at the high speed.
