X.3056. OILING. As regards oiling, we have run 1. EX with the extra oil on the whole time; we have had no trouble with oily plugs but the oil consumption on a run of 600 miles worked out to 1600 miles to the gallon. This is about half as much as we did before we had the extra oil on the whole time. The condition inside the cylinder shewed that a fair amount of carbon deposit had formed on the piston tops. The Test Dept: have tried several new chassis' with the extra oil on the whole time but in some cases on those cars they have had definite over-oiling sufficient to oil up the plug.

X.3657. We are running some pistons on the test engine which have a hole through the gudgeon pin to allow the oil to work through. There is an annular recess on the piston round the gudgeon pin to carry this oil round. We cannot say that so far we have found thsi has been any improvement as regards curing knocking pistons.
