FIXING OF BRAKE LINING.

13409.

We have sent to you under separate cover a sample of brake lining which has been subjected to severe useage.

It is of the thicker type and you will notice that the material is woven in layers and that these layers have moved relative to one another. We have taken the matter up with the makers and we think we may get some improvement, but we have already found that if they make the material much harder we suffer from squeaking brakes. As you are aware, some manufacturers cut a groove in the centre of the brake strap and have a die pressed lining which is recessed in the middle, which enables them to get hold of the top layers of the material as per sketch.

We should like to have any suggestions of experiments you would like us to make with a view to giving you information for design.
