X.3889. RE SIDE PETROL FILTER. X.3923

RECEIVED.

The model fitted to 6EX had to have a temporary vent fitted in order to use existing castings.

We send a print of "N" Scheme 517 shewing a method of fitting this vent pipe, making it in-visible, and at the same time rather better than the temporary scheme on 6EX, from the point of view of filling with petrol.

If it is thought that petrol might gradually accumulate in the vent so as to prevent it working properly, then it is suggested that a little plug could be fitted in the cast portion of the vent pipe, at its lowest point, which could be occasionally drained. A trouble which is experienced is in making a joint with the horizontal nut which carries the filter. We have suggested on "N" Scheme 517 that a central stainless steel bolt and nut might be used instead of the big thread, and a plain spigot on the filter cap, which would perhaps be more true with the flange, than would the thread.

We have also taken the opportunity of shewing the suggested alteration to the grips on the tightening screw and the main cap, so as to make them easier to handle than at present.

With reference to the proposed central bolt for securing the filter, if it is thought that there will be difficulty in casting the three ribs which carry the boss
