UNIT B.7
ENGINE GEARS.

Spec. RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/WSC.{W. S. Cassel}4/AP.26.1.34.

(Incorporating balancing cam.
(10 D.T.P. gears HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1221.

EX.12964 Cam wheel ("Fabroil")
EX.11692 Dynamo drive gear (Steel).
EX.12966 Water P. drive gear (Fabroil).
EX.11689 Idler gear (Steel).
EX.11686 Crank pinion (Steel).

Damping load = 13 lbs. at 17 1/2" rad.
Driving load = 18 " " " "

When these gears were new, a whine was noticeable at low and middle speeds, under a light load, but no rattle of any sort could be heard. This whine was slightly worse when the engine was cold, being only just audible when hot.

After considerable running, there is hardly any change, except that the whine is a little improved, being now hardly audible at all. There is still no audible gear rattle.

Representatives from the Test Dept., responsible for the production standard, report that these gears are a higher standard than present production, being better than the average 20/25.

Running time to date = 16 hours at all speeds ranging from 500 to 4500 R.P.M. (engine speed).
