Wheels & Tires

With reference to my letters last May on the subject of American tire standardisation, I attach a revised print of A-12177, standard rims and tires showing present sizes as now recommended though not formally standardised by the Tire and Rim Division of the SAE, which works out such matters in consultation with the Rubber Association etc.

The difference made in the latest list is that -

(a) 4-3/4 x 19 has been removed.
(b) 5-1/4 x 18 has been removed.
(c) 7" x 19 has been added.

I am unable to say that the first two items will be confirmed by general action of the SAE. Probably they will be.

The last item will undoubtedly be confirmed as the car manufacturers have taken the law into their own hands and are using this size without waiting for standardization.

We have two sets of 7" x 19 wheels and tires actually running at the works.

From the point of view of road clearance it is about the minimum size which we can safely use.

From the point of view of appearance it is desirable.
