AC.64. COPY 9th Nov. 1925. To EFC. PHILIPS RECTIFIER. This apparatus consists of a transformer, a rectifying valve and two lamp type resistances, housed in a metal case and provided with a flex and plug for 200 volts A.C. supply (frequency not specified) and flex and connector clips for the D.C. output. Three terminals are mounted in line on the apparatus, the middle of which carries a swivelling link connecting it either to the right or left hand terminal for dealing with different charging requirements. A preliminary test with 100 volts D.C. applied through a voltmeter showed that there was no connection between a the A.C. side and any other part of the equipment. The apparatus was then connected up for charging, a single cell of the reservoir battery being put on the D.C. wires. Both resistances, which have Edison screw-caps, were in place and the swivelling link connected for full output (rated at 6.0 amperes). (son) On switching on the A.C. there was a delay of a few seconds until the valve filament heated up. Then after several bright flashes had occurred in the valve, charging became steady at 6.1 amps (2.27 volts) the valve having a purple glow inside. The charging current could be reduced by approximately half by unscrewing either resistance lamp. It was noted that this also had the effect of reducing the glow in the valve. On open circuit the volts were from 10 to 11 (not steady) the filament was normal (appearing red through the dark deposit which lined the glass bulb of the valve), but the purple glow ceased. Various charging arrangements with the swivelling link as above, gave results as follows :- No. of cells. Volts. Resis. arrgt. D.C. amps.
