H6112 No. Cc By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Why. [Strikethrough]Mr./RD. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.[Strikethrough] E.4/HP.20.12.35. Phantom 3 Petrol Tanks. WST The original Phantom 3 petrol tank had a nominal capacity of 28 gallons, and this figure was increased by four gallons making it 32. The gauge should, therefore, not show more than 32 gallons, and although we know the full capacity of the tank is 34 1/4 when absolutely chock-full there is a certain amount of wastage of room both at the top level due to incomplete filling, and at the bottom due to incomplete emptying. The incomplete emptying is associated of course with camber on the road, turbulence, gradient, and one or two other small features. The purpose of this memo is to reiterate that the agreed nominal size of our present tank is 32 gallons, and that the gauge should be arranged for a certain amount of wastage. We believe the holes in the lower portion of the main baffles of the petrol tank can be very considerably reduced with benefit in preventing the fuel swirling about, and this is being investigated.
