To EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from EH. X. 1434 EH4/LG.9.9.19. 9th. Sept. 1919. With reference to your memo EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/T7/F1.9.19., re Lubricating Oils for Car Engines. Attached herewith is a copy of a memo from Mr. Royce where you will see he recommends that we should use Castrol for the running of Car engines. You will notice that he points out that the extra cost would only be the 100th. part of a penny per mile. We consider Mr. Royce is rather premature in recommending this oil because so far the tests we have run with it have only been for short durations. We suggest it would be a good thing if you could arrange to run chassis' with this oil. In your memo you say you are using Price's "B" Gear Oil (two-thirds) and Price's Amber "A" Oil mixed. On the Experimental Cars we use Price's Amber oil only and I thought that previous to the War we had got off using the thick black treacle-like oil. If you have not any definite reason for this mixture we think that there is an advantage in using the Amber oil only which is thinner. It enables changing gear to be much easier when the car is cold.
