Dear Mr. Hives,

Mr. Daniell has just shown me the Experimental Report No.421 that you were good enough to let him have.
I don't think it is necessary to comment on this in detail beyond saying that you have no doubt by now found out that the double handed spanner is a real improvement over a single handed.
It is rather difficult for us to appreciate the point you raise because in any case even the single handed serrated spanner is a great deal handier and easier to keep on than the "C" spanner that we are accustomed to.
With regard to the bad enamelling and bad plating and also wheel building not up to our usual standard, I am afraid I must ask you to take into consideration the hurry in which these wheels were done as well as the somewhat experimental nature of the design. I especially do not like to make excuses for imperfect wheel building but on the enamelling and the plating I know quite well that they were hurriedly and inadequately done.
