To RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} +328 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}24/KW.20.9.35. SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has lent to Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} the gearbox and Cadillac gears out of SpectreCodename for Phantom III 1-S-1. In return Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} is giving us the box which he has taken from 33-EX. We have reason to believe that chunking in the drive due to slack in various parts of the gearbox gets worse with greater mileage of the car. We have asked Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} to let us have his box right away, and shall be glad if you would dismantle it completely and measure up the slack in every parts of it; that is to say, we shall want to know the slack of the gears on the shafts, of the gear teeth, of the top, 3rd and 2nd driving pieces, and also the end float of the 3rd and 2nd loose pinions. We think also it would be advisable to measure the end play in all the bearings. We will then do sufficient mileage on the road so that the chunking is noticeably greater, then re-examine the box to find out where wear has taken place. On this particular box you will find that the splines underneath the constant mesh gears have been plated, so we think it would be as well if new shafts were used so that we are not misled by rapid wear of the soft plating.
