LTD., 490, IPSWICH ROAD, TRADING ESTATE, SLOUGH, BUCKS. 9th. November 1938. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham, Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., D E R B Y. Dear Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}, Further to the conversation we had at Derby about light alloys, and your letter of the 26th. October, I think it would be much better if you gave us drawings of the pistons you would like us to manufacture, firstly because Aerolites might not like us approaching them to release your drawings without official introductions from you, and secondly because we would like to feel we were testing pistons that would be useful to you. Therefore, we suggest that you send us drawings of split and unsplit skirt types. We have sent a man to Germany to get information on the latest type pressing machinery which they use for producing forged magnesium pistons. Experiments are in hand on the production of light alloy brake drums, and we are willing to make a die to experiment on the possibility of die casting the aluminium direct on to a cast iron liner. This die will be put in hand as soon as we receive the drawings of the type of drum you are interested in, as promised by Martindale. The man we have sent to Germany is also visiting a brake drum factory, where we hope to find out how the Mercedes racing car drums are made. - 1 - Cont'd . . . . . . | ||
