RE HOT SPOT INDUCTION SYSTEMS AND FOG MIXTURE. X4298

In connection with the new chassis, Mr. Royce has for some time proposed to try exhaust heat for the induction system. It is to be applied in the manner now known whereby a small part of the induction system where the petrol is likely to accumulate is made very hot, and it is supposed that the petrol is boiled off into vapour, and shortly afterwards condenses into a kind of fog in which condition it is easily distributed in an even manner to the cylinders.

The duration of the hot spot is so small that its effect in heating the charge is supposed to be inappreciable.

For the purpose of obtaining an immediate test of this principle, Mr. Royce would like an experiment made on the 40/50 H.P. at the earliest possible moment, in which a large stream of hot exhaust gas is passed through the throttle valve jacket; enough to make it very hot.

This experiment is also of interest in view of Mr. Platford's memo KP5/F13/12/20 on the difficulties of starting in cold weather.
