JAPAN 3. FRONT ANCHORAGE OF REAR SPRINGS.

With reference to R2/M3.2.31., we send herewith print of N. sch. 3223. shewing the following modifications:

The centre rib of the anchorage bracket is made broad and afterwards milled out from the back.

The cross member flange is shortened and forged in pairs.

The cross member is dropped and the tubular part of the anchorage bracket is raised. The brake cables now wrap round the cross member on full bump a small amount.

The simplified connection for conveying oil on to the rear axle referred to in R2/M3.2.31.

It is now suggested that with this method of conveying oil on to the rear axle it is not necessary to go through the spring bracket and down the outside, but the pipe could go direct to the shackle pin head.

It is suggested that if, due to the shackle pin bearing clearance, which is considerably more than the largest drip plug and may increase with wear, oil is drawn into the main pipe line, a non-return valve could be used where the pipe joins the shackle pin similar to that used on all the Bijur plugs, which closes when the pressure from the pump ceases. This proposal is shewn on N. sch. 3224. A filter is usually added but we have omitted this for simplicity.

It is also suggested that the pipe along the spring should be secured into the spring eye by a small union with an 'acorn' sleeve similar to the latest Bijur connections, which have the virtue of gripping the pipe without soldering, and would enable it to be added at the last minute, and so prevent damage to the pipe during handling of the spring.
