To Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} from EFC. X4021 EFC5/T3.12.26. WATFORD TYPE IS.12 MAGNETOS. Further to our conversation of this morning it was agreed that the position at present in regard to the eight magnetos of this type is that the two latests, Nos.83136/7 are with us and with distributors without screening. These have done a certain amount of running on the aero engine with so far satisfactory results. Of the other six, four, Nos.83119/20 and 83132/3, are Air Ministry property, and the other two Nos.83134/5 are our own property. These are all at present with Messrs. Norths for overhaul. You are enquiring of Messrs. North as to the progress they are making with these six magnetos as we are anxious for the return of another pair. The improvements which it is anticipated they will be making to these magnetos are:- (1) Improved contact breaker. (2) " distributor fixing. (3) Unscreened distributors (at any rate for the present). (4) Better exclusion of oil coming through from engine, in which connection we think there might be an oil-tight gland on each end of the magneto as a possible check on the passage of oil to the contact breaker. (5) Sometime possibly, but probably not yet, distributor rubber base material instead of bakelite material. As stated we are anxious to hear further news of these magnetos. EFC. | ||
