X3456 R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. Bs.{A J. Barnes - Assistant Manager} C. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} C. Pn.{Mr Northey} RADIATORS. Referring to R3/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 8. 8. 24 and dealing particularly with the supposed bursting of the 40/50 HP. radiator referred to, upon receipt of Sales' original complaint, we pointed out that this was something we had never had before, and would like to examine the radiator before making any comments. The result of our examination was:- 1. The steam pipes were, as we expected, quite clear. 2. The fault was not a burst, but the opening of a soldered joint between the angle of the top and back of the tank due to faulty soldering in the first place. 3. The radiator was one produced by Messrs Orme Evans and whilst we have no trouble with Orme Evans from the point of view of matrix corrosion, we get a certain percentage of failures resulting from the faulty soldering of the angle piece referred to in your memo, but once a leak had developed at the point in question and we have rectified same, no further trouble has ever been reported. My object in writing is to point out definitely that the fault was not a burst, but a trouble with which we at Derby are well acquainted, and one which has been pointed out to the makers and overcome.
